Fly-Fishing
Lake Trout, Arctic Grayling, Rainbow Trout and Sockeye Salmon inhabit the Battle Lake area. People from all over the world come to flyfish the World Famous Bristol Bay Fishery. Battle River is located in the heart of these famous Alaskan waters. We offer fishing excursions up the lake and floating downriver. Come cast your line and you may just hook a mighty Rainbow Trout! Battle River is renowned for trophy Rainbow Trout – tough to catch, but much worth the challenge when you land one. The river also produces some of the world’s largest Arctic Grayling – 20+ inch fish thrive in the cold, crystal clear water. Thousands of Sockeye Salmon flood the Battle River each August to spawn, bringing the lake Rainbow Trout, Lake Trout and Grayling to feed on the salmon eggs so they can survive another winter.
“Looking into the crystal-clear water of Battle River, you see the reason for this place and this time: bright red Sockeye Salmon, lots of them. This is one of the destinations, one of the spawning grounds for the salmon, this is the time of year when they arrive here.”
Hiking
With over twelve different Katmai hikes to places like Cathedral Dome, Beaver Marsh, Battle River Wilderness Retreat is a hiker’s delight! Not only will you experience Katmai’s beautiful alpine landscape, you’re apt to glimpse Alaska’s greatest natural resource – its wildlife!
Boating
Spectacular Battle Lake and River are right at your doorstep – and what better way to explore this glacial carved drainage than by inflatable jet boat! You might even pull a “Big Ole Lake Trout” from his secluded hole if you’re so inclined. Let’s explore Battle River, searching its nooks and crannies for the elusive River Otter, or Narrow Cove at twilight to hear the wail of the Arctic Loon.
“The hospitality, friendliness and skill of the guides/boatmen/cooks could not have been better.”
Photography
Many of our guests come to Battle River for the sole purpose of photographing the magnificent scenery and wildlife, specifically the great Alaskan Brown Bear. Just look at the pictures across this website – our personal attempts to capture the special nature of the place. Grizzly Bears rule the surrounding tundra and river. We’ll help guide you to get that perfect shot of a Grizzly snatching a salmon from the Alaskan Waters! Whether it be a float trip down the Battle River to photograph brown bears or a hike on the tundra hillsides to pick blueberries with them, we try our best to help you get the photos you want.
Optional Flyout Trips
In addition to the numerous activities available at Battle, we offer optional flyout trips at charter cost! Popular trips include flightseeing over the Valley of 10,000 Smokes, fishing for Silver Salmon, or visiting the Brooks River Falls.
