ALASKA’S BATTLE RIVER Wilderness Retreat… Home of Glacial Carved Rivers, Majestic Mountain Peaks and the Great Alaskan Brown Bear!

We have one of the most beautiful settings in all of Alaska! Brown Bears and other assorted wildlife are neighbors, wandering by to check out new guests is routine. Battle River Wilderness Retreat sits along Katmai’s secluded Battle Lake and river. Our wood-frame “Alaskan” cabins offer a cozy atmosphere including oil stoves and fresh linens. Our modern bathhouse provides that much needed hot shower on a rainy, cold day and you can always count on a hot pot of coffee sitting in the dining cabin. Home to our infamous gourmet meals, the riverfront dining cabin provides relaxation and plenty of guest chatter. Our staff, both professional and personable, often like to tell tales – some you believe, some you don’t – but the fun stories will make your trip truly memorable. We’re just friendly people who want to share Alaska’s magnificent wilderness with you and provide an opportunity to have the time of your life in Katmai’s rugged, scenic Alaska!

Is Battle River for me?
Battle River Wilderness Retreat is located on the Alaska Peninsula. Tim Conway strives to operate this beautiful place for guests to enjoy world-class fly-fishing and brown bear photography. Battle River Wilderness Retreat hosts an exclusive eight guests at a time. Since 1985, Tim’s rustic lodge accommodations have thrilled and comforted families and small groups of friends with an enthusiasm for the natural environment.

Quotes from our guests

“The setting at Battle is absolutely enchanting – a valley in the remote interior of Katmai National Park with magnificent vistas of colorful tundra sweeping invitingly away to the surrounding hills and mountains, a large and beautiful lake, and a hidden valley with a large beaver pond and a second lake. The mood is impressively different depending upon the weather: overcast with the tops of the mountains shrouded in clouds and a cold wind blowing off the lake; bright, warm sunshine and a clear blue sky; or the lake under a clear night sky with the light of a nearly full moon tracing a shining path across the water. The effect is truly magical.”

“Battle offers a wilderness solitude surrounded by amazing wildlife and genuine people. This special place has given me some of my fondest memories and life-long friendships.”

“The camp projects an aura of excitement and adventure, a promise which is quickly and completely fulfilled.”

“There’s no other place like this.”

Where is Battle River?

Check our map! You will see that we’re located about 250 miles southwest of Anchorage in the outback of Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve. Gateway to McNeil River Brown Bear Sanctuary, Battle River is one of only a handful of lodges in Katmai, America’s third largest park.  Needless to say, we don’t have any close neighbors except for the wildlife.

“and not another living soul within twenty miles or so, nor a town of any significance for perhaps
a hundred miles.”
